Abstract
Numerous control techniques have been developed to improve the efficiency of single phase motor drive systems. Majority of the systems use the pulse width modulated control strategy which is the fundamental and widely prevalent. This paper describes the comparison of sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) and random frequency pulse width modulation (RFPWM) control techniques for a single phase inverter. The control of the fundamental voltage fed to the R and RLE load is studied. The THD component in the alternating output is compared for gating signals produced using sinusoidal PWM and similarly with RFPWM are implemented in field programmable gate array (FPGA). In addition the noise generated in the motor load is determined. FPGA provides fast speed of operation and reprogramming capability. Verilog hardware description language (VHDL) is used for programming.
