Abstract |
The energy sector is currently facing a challenge to meet the demands for electricity in an affordable and environmentally friendly way. The use of coal as a fossil fuel has been a major contributor to the power sector, but the carbon dioxide released from thermal power plants is a serious concern for the environment. In India, the cofiring of biomass and coal in thermal power plants has emerged as a promising sustainable energy production method. This method offers many benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions and utilization of locally available biomass, which can significantly reduce pollution from stubble burning. There are challenges in co-firing biomass in existing coal-fired power plants, as these plants are designed solely for coal. Biomass differs from coal chemically and physically.There are also other challenges like sustained biomass availability, storage, and logistics. This paper focuses on the possibilities and constraints associated with biomass co-firing in Indian Thermal Power Plants.
