Abstract
This paper presents a planar microstrip patch antenna as a primary radiator consisting of two superstrates arrays comprising a Square Ring Resonator structure as a metamaterial unit cell. The antenna is modeled using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and resonates at S band. The antenna structure consists of two meta-material superstrate layers arranged along two different axes to suppress surface waves due to their negative permeability. The antenna achieves reflection coefficient of -27.55dB at 2.4GHz and maintains good radiation characteristics with a peak gain of 3.601dB at resonant frequency. The antenna has wide applications in RF communication as it operates on the ISM band. Keywords - Metamaterials; Patch Antenna; Surface Waves; Radiation Pattern.
