Abstract
In a renewable energy based hybrid system, an energy storage system is incorporated for storing the excess power available from the source. In a Photovoltaic system, especially in a standalone mode of operation, batteries are used for storing surplus power from PV array. The stored energy can be delivered to the load whenever there is insufficient availability of power from PV array due to lack of solar irradiation. In order to store the surplus power and deliver the same to the load whenever needed, a switching circuit called bidirectional converter is employed in PV system. In this paper, a bidirectional DC-DC buck/boost converter is modeled for a 5 kW Distributed PV system and its functioning is simulated in Matlab/Simulink environment. Also, control strategy for bidirectional operation of converter for charging and discharging of battery is implemented to get desired performance. The performance of bidirectional converter is analyzed under different modes of operation. Keywords - Hybrid system, Photovoltaic (PV) system, Batteries, Bidirectional converter, Buck-Boost Converter
