Abstract
This paper outlines the combination of Taguchi method with response surface methodology (TM/RSM) aimed at optimizing the operating parameters used in wood-fired ceramics. A Taguchi experiment was first performed to obtain an efficient experiment design and analyze the effects of various operating parameters on the surface of the resulting ceramics. These results were then used in RSM to predict operating parameters at discrete levels. Clay location, clay composition, and kiln temperature were selected as the major control factors. An L18 orthogonal array was then used to guide further investigation in order to reduce the number of experiments. The objective was to maximize the amount of ash and gloss, while minimizing marks caused directly from the fire. Our results revealed that at 1240􀀀, vessels placed on the bottom shelves at the front of the kiln accumulated the largest quantity of ash. At 1260􀀀, white clay vessels placed in the same position obtained the most pronounced gloss. At 1260􀀀, white clay vessels placed on the bottom shelves in the center of the kiln were least affected by fire marks. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using TM/RSM in the design of operating parameters for wood-fired ceramics and provides a valuable reference for ceramics experts seeking to obtain ideal surface effects.
