Abstract
Nowadays the torsional vibration damping of medium and slow-speed engines is achieved through untuned viscous friction dampers which are optimized for one particular severe order of vibration depending on the type of engine. Silicone fluid is used as the damping medium because of its high viscosity and markedly superior viscosity-temperature relationship as compared to other damping fluids. This paper analyses the damping attained through viscous friction dampers at all modes and orders of vibration, and proposes the use of Magnetorheological (MR) fluids for attaining optimum damping response at each mode or order. MR fluids comprise a class of smart materials whose rheological properties can be controlled rapidly and reversibly by the application of an external magnetic field.
