Abstract
The concept of sustainable development is based on the observation that economy, environment and wellbeing can no longer be separated. The methodology is based on the use of sustainability for the waste water treatment for sustainable solution. The description of the sustainability indicators is preceded by an introduction into sustainability and sustainable technology. Sustainability challenges us to reflect on wastewater treatment differently. Instead of focusing on end-of-pipe-treatment for emission prevention, attention shifts towards optimal resource utilization, favoring the development of decentralized systems. In an extensive literature review we give an overview of sustainability assessment methods and currently used indicators. Based on this we propose a general waste water treatment process which will give a sustainable wastewater treatment system.
