FSW's Ultrasonic Method for Determining Residual Stresses in Welded Aeronautical Structures

The aim of this work is to determine residual stresses in aeronautical welded structures utilizing friction stir welding (FSW) and the ultrasonic method. Aeronautical aluminum (7075-T6) was chosen because it has an excellent mechanical structure and structural hardening but is difficult to weld using traditional fusion procedures. The new ecological welding technique (FSW) does not require any filler metal and avoids solidification flaws, allowing the assembly of difficult-to-weld alloys such as aluminum of the 2000 and 7000 series. The adoption of this technology in the aircraft industry saves manufacturing and operational expenses due to weight reduction. This process involves a number of processes, including microstructural alterations, heat transport, and the formation of residual stresses. Because residual stresses can alter mechanical qualities and lower failure likelihood, preventative maintenance is required to determine the degree of permissible stress in service. The ultrasound nondestructive approach based on the acoustoelectric effect is utilized to determine these stresses. Keywords - FSW, NDT, Ultrasound, Residual Stresses, Aluminum Alloy
