Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to determine the radon concentration in surface waters affected by uraniumcontaining surface debris and outcrops. In this study, the results of a study on the radon concentration in surface waters of Kasar uranium deposits located within the borders of Manisa province in the Aegean region of Turkey are reported. The uranium ores in this area are of Neogene age and are generally in the form of altered sandstone and conglomerate. Therefore, the surface exposures contain altered U3O8, which is easily dissolved by surface waters. The research includes real-time measurements using the RAD7 portable radon monitor and the collection of water samples from adits, springs, streams, and rivers and determining the radon content in them. The source of the high radon concentration on the surface was determined to be the outgrowths of uranium ore regions and rock piles with high uranium content. Radon concentration levels obtained from the surface waters of the uranium mine site were evaluated by comparing national and international standards. Due to the high radon concentration obtained, appropriate techniques that can be applied for the remediation of this contaminated area have been proposed.
