Abstract
Abstract - In this study, magnesium alloy ZK60A was coated with four different types of coatings using PVD method. The coating composition can be described asAl-Ti-Si-Nb (S1), Al-Ti-Nb (S2), Al-Ti-N (S3), and multilayer Al-Ti-Nb(S4) coatings. The coatings were developed by employing a combination of magnetron sputtering, arc-vapor deposition, and in-situ nitriding. PVD coated specimens were heat treated in accordance with a proprietary heat treatment methodology developed by SMW Group. Afterheat treatment process, the specimens were exposed to corrosion resistance test in 5% NaCl solution. The best corrosion resistance was exhibited by S1 and S4.It was found that corrosion was localised in the form of pitting and several regions of the surface were not affected by the corrosive environment at all. Deposition methods and structure played a significant role in the corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy.
