Abstract
Abstract- The rapid rise in the use of NPs determine a proportional rise of their release in the environment. Among them ZnO and CuO NPs, have grabbed attention, because of their high production for their diverse applications. The aim of this study has been to evaluate and compare the acute effects of Zinc oxide (ZnO) and Copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) to copepod crustacea Tigriopus fulvus. Short-time tests, were carried out, even providing a contemporary physico-chemical characterization of testing suspension/solutions.T. fulvus exposed to ZnO NPs showed highest toxicity compared with CuO NPs. LC50 values ranged from 9 mg/L (24h) to 1.39 mg/L (96h) for ZnO NPs; for CuO NPs the LC50 values ranged from 74.3 mg/L (24h) to 11.7 mg/L (96h).The results can contribute to the application of the precautionary principle approach for the disposal of ZnO NPs into the environment and they are paramount for the derivation of guidelines regarding the responsible use of nanomaterials. Keywords- Nano-ecotoxicology, Zinc oxide nanoparticles, Copper Oxide Nanoparticles, Copepoda, Tigriopus fulvus
