Abstract
Abstract - This work is devoted to the comparison of wear behavior of hypereutectic Aluminium-Silicon alloy and its Beryllium modification with respect to temperature. Cast samples of both the alloys were put to the sliding wear tests at temperatures of 20˚C, 50˚C and 80˚C along with different loads (20N, 25N, and 30N) and sliding velocities (0.6m/s, 0.8m/s, and 1m/s). The wear rates of both Al-20Si and its Beryllium modification, at same test parameters, are primarily analysed. The result shows that as the temperature increases the wear rate grows gradually from 20˚C to 50˚C and then grows sharply as we move from 50˚C to 80˚C. Wear rate of both hypereutectic Aluminium-Silicon and its Beryllium modification increases with temperature. Beryllium modified hypereutectic Aluminium-Silicon alloy, however, wears less as compared to the hypereutectic Aluminium-Silicon alloy at all sets of temperature, load, and sliding velocity combinations. Abrasive and ploughing are the main wear mechanisms below 50˚C above which the wear mechanism changes to ploughing and adhesive wear. Scanning Electron Micrographs of worn pin surfaces have been used to show wear mechanisms at different temperatures. Moreover, wear rate at 0.6m/s sliding velocity is more as compared to 1m/s, and the impact of load is more at higher temperatures as it leads to more adhesive wear.
