Abstract
Aluminium metal has played and continues to play a key role in the development of light weight materials such as metal matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with a variety of ceramic materials including Al2O3, TiC, B4C, and Si-C. From the wide range of MMCs systems studied thus far and on account of the attractive properties of Si-C, Al-Si-C composites have drawn the attention of a plethora of research scientists and technologists. Al-Si-C metal matrix composites were synthesized using stir casting techniques to induce the formation of Silicon Carbide. The silicon and graphite were added in powder form and the formation of Silicon carbide and other intermetallic phases were investigated with SEM and optical micro structural studies. The wear resistance and Rockwell hardness of the composites were also studied with varying amount of (1%, 2%, 3% and 10%) Si-C. Being extremely lighter than the conventional gray cast iron material, the Al-Al2O3 and Al-Si-C composites could be potential green materials for applications in the automobile industry, for instance, in making car disc brake rotors.
