Abstract
Alternative assessment techniques are essential for increasing student learning and interactivity in distance education courses. Rather than simply answer multiple-choice questions, students can choose activities in an academic contract. By using a contract, students will be active participants in their own learning. Contracts add a dimension of authenticity to distance learning courses and students can learn, retain, and transfer more of course content. Guidelines and an example of a contract will be given. Keywords- Alternative assessment, authentic assessment, Distance learning, E-learning
