Abstract
This discussion paper explores how universities are using artificial intelligent to meet complex contemporary educational challenges. Following a characterization of the field, recent contextual developments in artificial intelligence is examined, specific to innovations that include automated essay grading, adaptive and personalized learning, digital courseware, virtual tutoring, and learning analytics. Evidence-based examples are identified to demonstrate real-world applications and highlight implications for future development. It is concluded that the development trajectories across both fields could be better served with improved convergence in the developmental cycle.
