Abstract
In hospital and health-care systems, medical equipment play a critical role. The preventive and corrective maintenance strategies are the common methods used in the maintenance of medical equipment. The aim of the study was to assess the inventory maintenance management, utilization and the competence of the staff handling critical care equipment in CCUs that cost one lakh or more. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a 840 bedded Tertiary care teaching hospital, Raigad district, Maharashtra. The medical equipment from the 5 Critical Care Units (EMSICU, MICU, SICU, PICU, CVTSICU) which cost one lakh or more and were in good working condition were included in the study. A Stratified Random Sampling technique was used to include 50% of the staff from 5 CCUs, biomedical engineering and stores department. Observational checklists and a pretested semi-structured questionnaire were used to collect data. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel version 2019. All ventilators were subjected to preventive maintenance strategies, both inhouse and outsourced but for other equipment such as BIPAP machine etc. it was in-house. The average utilization rate of the Central Monitor 68% was the highest followed by Bedside Monitor 27.07%. Only 6 (42.9%) of the doctors and 8 (25%) of the nurses knew correctly about the maintenance strategy for ventilators.
