Abstract
Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is one of the major public health problems that have contributed mostly to orphans leading child-headed families in developing countries. The purpose of the study was to explore challenges experienced by children in child-headed families. A qualitative, exploratory design was used to explore and describe the challenges faced by children in child-headed households. Purposive sampling was used and data were obtained through face-to-face interviews using an interview guide. Data collection continued until data saturation which occurred after interviewing 10 participants. Open coding was used to analyse data. The following themes emerged from the study: Socio-economic challenges and Psychological challenges. The involvement of community stakeholders in the support of orphans in their community is crucial.
