Abstract
Institutional repositories provide institutions an opportunity to establish a prime location that collects and preserves the resources in digital form. The scholars increased demand for information, especially in the field of science and technology demands scholarly institutions for centralized access to institutional digital resources which helps to provide the scientific output. Scholars increased demand for the online publishing, networking, good research are driving the demand for extensive access. The paper explores the development of Institutional repositories in India as now the repositories are an essential part of academic and research community. The actions undertaken by the academic and research institutes in India towards the development of Institutional Repositories have also been highlighted. It also explores the Institutional Repository of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, Punjab.
