Abstract
When the wind power is injected into the electric grid affects the power quality. The effects of the power quality measurements are the active power, reactive power, variation of voltage, flicker, harmonics, and electrical behaviour of switching operations. The STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) is shunt connected VSC (Voltage Source Converter) with self- commutating device and can be effectively used for reactive power compensation.This paper presents STATCOM with wind energy system at point of common coupling to mitigate power quality issues. The STATCOM control scheme for grid connected wind energy system is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK for the purpose of power quality improvement in power system. The simulation results reveal the performance of STATCOM in conjunction with PI controller.
