Abstract
In today’s world that has been plagued by pollution, diseases and now, COVID-19, there has been an exponential rise in the number of pulmonary diseases such as COPD, Asthma, ILD, to name a few. The test used to measure the extremity of these lung diseases is known as a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT).In this paper, we present a design of a low-cost Digital PFT known as a Spirometer. A Spirometer is the most common type of PFT on the market. It measures the air flow of the lungs during forced expiration/inspiration to calculate the volume of the lungs. Clinical spirometers are very expensive and can only be operated by trained professionals. Even tests in most private clinics are expensive and can be heavy on your pockets if the tests need to be performed frequently. We aim to develop a low-cost portable digital spirometer that is user-friendly, supports mobile connectivity and will be cost-effective. Through this project, we would like to provide more accessibility to these tests patients who (i) are unable to travel to clinics, (ii) do not have clinics in their vicinity, or (iii) are in the lowincome category.
