Abstract
Cockroach has a crucial role in transmitting disease either mechanically and biologically because they harbor and spread pathogenic or potentially pathogenic microorganisms. This study is carried out to investigate the types of bacteria carried on the external body and alimentary tract of cockroaches collected from food premises. A total of 102 cockroaches consisting of Periplanetta americana and Blatta orientalis were collected at food premises in Section 2, Shah Alam Selangor. Isolation and identification of bacteria from the cockroaches were performed using standard bacteriological methods. Confirmation on the identity of the isolated bacteria was carried out using RapID ONE System (REMEL, USA). Escherichia coli were the most common bacteria isolated from both external body and digestive tract of cockroaches. Other potentially pathogenic bacteria successfully isolated from both part of cockroaches were Shigella spp, Morganella morganii, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Crono sakazakii, Citro freundii, Serratia marcescens, Hafnia alvei, Acin calcaeticus, and Tantumella ptyseos. Therefore, data obtained from this study emphasized the fact that cockroaches may play an important role in transmission of pathogenic bacteria and may cause health problems to human Keyword- Food premises, Periplanetta americana, Blatta orientalis, E.coli, Morganella morganii, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Crono sakazakii, Citro freundii, Serratia marcescens, Hafnia alvei, Acin calcaeticus, Tantumella ptyseos
