Abstract
Pharmaceutically active compounds are considered as emerging environmental problem due to their continuous input and persistence to the aquatic ecosystem even at low concentrations. Among them, Naproxen (NPX) a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug has been often documented in different sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents at concentration levels between 25 ng.L-1 and 33.9 μg.L-1. Many treatment technologies, including advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been developed in order to degrade NPX in wastewater and wastewater sludge. Recently, the use of Goethite (GO) with hydrogen peroxide has been found effective in oxidizing organic compounds due to catalysis at the surface of Goethite and the generation of ferrous ion. This study, carried out on NPX, revealed different thermal (in darkness and at ambient temperature) and photochemical behavior in the presence of Goethite in aqueous solution when the experimental conditions vary. The photo-degradation of NPX was also investigated in heterogeneous phase with Goethite in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, at different experimental conditions. The behavior of NPX-GO system in absence of irradiation has shown that NPX disappear when the medium became acid.On irradiation at 365 nm of the mixture, NPX-GO-H2O2 study showed that NPX disappears more rapidly due to the action of the .OH radicals generated by the Fenton and photo-Fenton reaction. The photodegradation of NPX in the mixture NPX-GO-H2O2 under solar light was significantly accelerated in comparison with artificial irradiation at 365nm. This work has also demonstrated the efficacy of the degradation of these pollutants in heterogeneous phase up on irradiation of Fe (III) oxyhydroxydes.
