Abstract
The prime advantage of stone mastic asphalt (SMA) is its ability to provide more durable surfacing, as well as its high resistance from damage due to heavy axel loads. However, the initial cost for preparation of SMA is more than the other common asphalt mixes. On the other hand, the utilization of waste and byproducts in the construction is still limited, especially in developing countries like India. For that, this study focused to investigate the mix design characteristics of SMA incorporating rice husk ash (RHA) and pond ash (PA) as filler instead of conventional hydrated lime (HL) with locally available jute fibre additive. At first standard Marshall trial specimens were prepared with six bitumen content from 5.5% to 7% with a 0.3% increment for control mix (2% HL as filler) and mixes with 2% RHA and PA as alternative filler. In all the mixes 0.3% jute fibrewas used as additive. The obtained results showed that the mix containing RHA exhibited lower optimum bitumen contentthan the mix having PA filler as well as control mix.Further, the results of draindown test also supported the use of jute fibre as additive for SMA mix. Index Terms- Jute Fibre, Pond Ash, Rice Husk Ash, Stone Mastic Asphalt.
