Abstract
We report electrohydrodynamic instability in nematic liquid crystals 4-methoxybenzylidene-4-butylaniline (MBBA) found in planar Sandwich cell and Helle-Shaw cell which are aligned by parallel oriented nanofiber. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber with diameter 260±80 nm and alignment parameter (S) 0.946±0.005 were used as the alignment layer for the sample and created by modified electrospinning method using copper (Cu) as acollector. In planar sandwich cell, regular domain pattern such as Williams Domain, Fluctuating Williams Domains, and grid pattern has been observed to form in nematic liquid crystals when an electric field is applied. In Helle-Shaw cell we observed Williams Domain, Saw-teeth Pattern, and Dynamics Scattering Mode. Parallel alignment nanofiber can be a promising alternative for alignment layer of liquid crystals as we found no significant difference in the pattern threshold voltage of our sample and sample made using conventional rubbing method. Keywords- Parallel oriented nanofiber, Electrospinning, Electroconvection, Nematic liquid crystals.
