Abstract
A study is conducted to evaluate the performance of stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mix, with modified binders and Warm Mix Asphalt technology in comparison to convention asphalt for use as a surface course in India. SMA is a special type of a gap-graded hot mix asphalt with a high percentage (> 70%) of coarse aggregate. SMA consist of stone-on-stone skeleton with rich proportion of binder. The objective of the study is to investigate the influence of modified binders and Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology in regards to resilient properties of mixtures. For this research work five mix design were prepared with different binder types i.e. plain bitumen of Viscosity Grade 30 (VG-30), Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB-40), Crumb Rubber Modifier Bitumen (CRMB-55) and Warm-Mix Asphalt (WMA produced by the doping of chemical additive: "EvoTherm" and "ZycoTherm." seperately, in the PMB-40 as the base binder). WMA is a energy- efficient and environmentally friendly product that significantly lowers mixing, production, placing and compaction temperatures of asphalt mixes. Optimum binder content for 13 mm nominal aggregate size, is determine using Marshall mould method with lime and cellulose fiber as stabilising agent. It is observed that the use of modified bitumen and warm mix asphalt technology improved the performance of SMA mixes when compared to the conventional bitumen. Keywords— SMA, Resilient Modulus, PMB, CRMB, WMA, Evotherm, Zycotherm.
