Abstract
The need for energy resources and fuels keeps growing day after day. Fossil fuels are non renewable and are highly polluting. At this point we need to turn towards alternative sources of energy in order to fulfill the energy requirement. One of the most suitable alternative sources of energy is Biodiesel. A biodiesel is a kind of animal or vegetable fat. They consist of long chain alkyl esters. The most attractive quality of biodiesels is that they are synthesized from renewable sources and are also bio-degradable. At present biodiesel production is costly, but the cost can be reduced by preparing biodiesel from low cost oils such as Canola oil. The Biodiesel is created by transesterfication process in which canola oil is reacted with methanol in the presence of catalyst sodium hydroxide which produces a biodiesel and glycerin coproduct. The biodiesel is then emulsified with water, and the cerium oxide nano particles are dispersed in the fuel through sonication. The emission characteristics of various blends of biodiesel such as NB20, NB40, NB60 and NB100 are found by application in a four-stroke single cylinder compression ignition engine and compared with that of diesel. It is seen that the NOx emission of the biodiesel blends is higher than that of diesel but HC and CO emissions are lower than that of diesel. Keywords— Biodiesel, Emulsion, Cerium oxide, Canola oil.
