Abstract
ustainability of muscle mass predominantly depends upon AMPK (5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase) an enzyme that plays a vital role in cellular energy balance. Perhaps, exercise is the, most effective physiological activator of AMPK in the skeletal muscles. Physical inactivity has serious implications on physical, physiological and psychological well-being of humans. In this paper, we will try to ascertain the relationship between inactivity and deterioration of skeletal muscle mass due to decrease in production of AMPK. Attempts shall also be made to understand the therapeutic benefits of regular physical activity in activation of AMPK and its role in the prevention and treatment of specific disorders and diseases.
