Abstract
The use of microchannel heat sinks with porous media has been shown to reduce pressure drop and improve heat transfer. An optimization study is presented in this study that evaluates the impacts of porous thickness on the hydoplics and thermal performance of porous microchannel heat sinks (MCHS). Pressure drops increased with increased porous thickness. However, there is not an optimum pressure drop. Adding a porous structure improves heat transfer for fins in the thickness range studied in this paper. Heat transfer coefficients have been found to be exponentially related to solid thicknesses for all solid thicknesses. Moreover, when the fraction of nanofluid volume increases, so does the heat transfer coefficient and Reynolds number. A velocity of 1.2 m/s caused the greatest change in pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient with porous thickness. Variations of the parameters decrease with decreasing velocity.
