Abstract
Abstract - The paper reports radon exhalation rate in soils of Davanagere district of Southern India. Radon exhalation rate in soil was determined by the sealed can technique using LR-115 type-II detectors. The radon levels in the environs of Davanagere district varies in the range 45.6 ± 0.8 to 136.4 ± 0.8 Bq m‒3. The effective radium content in the soils were found to vary from 80.8 ± 1.5 to 244.5 ± 1.5 mBq kg‒1. Surface exhalation rate of radon was found to vary from 39.6 ± 0.7 to 118.8 ± 0.7 mBq m‒2 h‒1, and mass exhalation rates of radon vary from 15.3 ± 0.2 to 46.3 ± 0.3 mBq kg‒1 h‒1. The results reveal that the radon exhalation rate varies with the radium content of the soil. A significant positive correlation was observed between effective radium content and radon exhalation rate. The alpha index, emanation coefficient and annual effective dose were also have been estimated for the population of the region.
