Abstract
Abstract - The hydrometallurgical processusing sulfuric acid to extract zinc from zinc oxide in the electric arc furnace (EAF) dust has been studied. Zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4), the very stable complex compound, is mostly found in theEAF dust which is by-product from a steel making industry. The EAF dustwas mixed with calcium oxide (CaO) in order to breakdown the ZnFe2O4 to zinc oxide (ZnO). The optimum conditions were found to be; 1:2 molar ratio of ZnFe2O4 and CaO, heated at 800oC for 2 hours. X-Ray diffractometer results confirmedthat approximately 80% of ZnFe2O4decomposed to ZnO. The treated EAF dust was then leached by sulfuric acid solution. The optimum conditions could be extracted up to 75% of zinc; solid/liquid ratio 1:10, 2M concentration of H2SO4, temperature of 50 ÂșC and leaching time for 5 minutes. The zinc-rich solution could be further performed to recover zinc by the electrowinning process. Keywords - EAF Dust; Zinc ferrite; Zinc oxide; Sulfuric Acid; Zinc extraction.
