Abstract |
Abstract – Yamuna River receives heavy load of sewage and industrial effluent in Delhi stretch due to speedy urbanization which leads to its destruction. In spite of Yamuna Action Plan-I (April1993-2003), Action Plan-II (December 2004-March 2011) & Action Plan–III (2011-till date) and spending huge amount on maintaining the river water quality, the river water is toxic and categorized as not fit for irrigation and drinking purposes. In this review, data of different research publications and Government of India (GOI) reports of organizations like, National Green Tribunal (NGT), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) etc. was studied and Yamuna River water quality status with respect to surrounding biotic components and submerged abiotic components (concrete structures) is represented. Also data related to the level of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Bio Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of last 10 years measured by CPCB are summarized. As far as concrete structures like bridges, tunnels, government buildings, residential buildings in the vicinity of Yamuna River is concerned there is an increased requirement for Structural Health Monitoring. Thus, this review work will help and work as benchmark for researchers, industrialist and GOI to compare and analyze the data for future solution to this severe issue of Yamuna River.
