Abstract
Abstract - To protect water bodies, groundwater, soil, animals and humans from the damages of draining large quantities of polluted water produced from petroleum fields to nature, the residues of crude oil suspended in the produced water after the initial separation process by gravity are separated using different types of treatment methods. In the present study, the absorption method was used to remove crude oil from the produced water. Effective absorbent material was prepared from locally available raw materials with low economic value. PFWD aerogel was prepared from Palm fronds and waste date using chemical pre-treatment, mixing and freezing, freeze-drying system and pyrolysis approach. The measured properties of the PFWD aerogel revealed high porosity, hydrophobicity and a contact angle 0℃ of crude oil which makes it an efficient absorbent. The carrying capacity of the PFWD aerogel was tested to absorb of crude oil and the effect of time and temperature in the batch process, where it was found that at a 25℃ and 15 minutes, the saturation percentage reaches 100% and the maximum weight gained was 66. The efficiency of the PFWD aerogel was also verified in removing crude oil from polluted water using a constant process that takes place within a manufactured system, as it showed a high efficiency for a relatively long accumulated time before its competence began to decline at a constant flow rate, this indicates that PFWD aerogel is a promising absorbent in the practical application.
