Abstract
Although essential to living organisms, cobalt is toxic when present in the environment in concentrations which surpass the physiological limits.Cobalt removal from contaminated sites using bioremediation methods can be an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach, and obtaining cobalt-accumulating organisms which do not develop toxicity symptoms is a pre-requisite for an efficient bioremediation process. In this study we show that Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells which express the Arabidopsis thaliana metallothioneins AtMT4a and AtMT4b targeted to the inner face of the plasma membrane developed both tolerance and accumulative capacity towards cobalt and the possibility to utilize these strains to remove cobalt from synthetic effluents is presented.
