Abstract
Conventional bituminous material does not have the performance requirements for road construction, which are increasingly subjected to heavy loads, heavy traffic, frequent stresses and various climactic and environmental conditions. When the produced bituminous mixture does not meet the climate, traffic, and pavement structure requirements, to qualify as an optimal mixture, this kind of bituminous mixture need to be modified by an attractive alternative to gain the required properties to be able to overcome the stresses and distresses that the pavement undergoes resulting from bitumen deficiencies in the mixture. Modification of bituminous mixtures offers one answer to overcome this problem, and thereby improve the performance and durability of the pavement. Many studies suggested the application of polymers to bituminous mixtures to modify it in a way to significantly enhance its performance, however, using polymer is costly. Using waste polymers, as modifiers is one of the several ways to cut the expenses and reduce the overall cost of road pavement projects. This review paper reported the utilization of polymer waste in asphalt pavement and the impact of using polymer waste on both of environment and road construction.
