Abstract
Phyllostachys bambusoides Siebold & Zucc. is an important bamboo species of Apatani tribe in Arunachal Pradesh, India. Physical properties namely moisture content, specific gravity and shrinkage (longitudinal, tangential, radial and volumetric) were investigated at different height positions (Bottom, middle and top) in culms of 2-4 years old P. bambusoides of Ziro valley. Radial shrinkage was higher than tangential shrinkage in all age groups. All physical properties decreased from bottom to top except specific gravity and longitudinal shrinkage. Two way analysis of variance indicated that age had significant effect on all physical properties except longitudinal shrinkage whereas height and interaction of age and height had no effect on physical properties. The volumetric shrinkage was minimum in culms of 3years than 2ndand 4th years which indicate that P. bambusoides was more dimensionally stable at the age of 3year.
