Abstract |
Background: Urinary tract infection is one of the most important diseases infect all individuals groups mainly elderly women and men worldwide. Objective: The aim of the present study was to detect the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of gram-negative bacteria isolated from elderly patients infected with urinary tract infection in Al-Najaf City, Iraq. Materials and methods: A total of 120 urine samples were collected from elderly patients infected with UTI in Al-Najaf City, Iraq. The antibiotic susceptibility testing was done according to Kirby-Bauer method. Results: One hundred and twenty six of different Gram-Negative bacterial strains were isolated. E.coli was the most predominant bacteria followed by K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, C. freundii , E. aerogenes and P. mirabilis .Most bacterial isolates were highly resistant against most antibiotics especially against amoxicillin and third generation cephalosporin’s. While, imipenem provided best antibacterial effect against most isolates Conclusions: This study demonstrated that most bacterial isolates from elderly patients with urinary tract infection became highly resistant to most antimicrobials.
