Abstract |
This randomized controlled tested the effects of nurse-facilitated problem-solving-based self-learning program (NPSP) for family carers of people with recent-onset psychosis in Hong Kong over a 12-month follow-up. A multi-center randomized controlled trial with repeated-measures, three-arm design was adopted. One hundred and eighty family dyads (patients and main carers) were randomly recruited from two community family care centers and randomly assigned into NPSP, family psychoeducation or usual family care group for 5-month interventions. Participants in the NPSP indicated significant greater improvements in social problem-solving and family burden, as well as reduction in patients‟ lengths of re-hospitalizations at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. The findings support the effectiveness of the NPSP protocol tested, which can be offered to mental health organizations locally and internationally for recent-onset psychotic patients in need, and further investigated in families of diverse psychiatric populations.
