Abstract
The chemical expertise of the ancient dyer is evident from the various colorful textile dyeings that have survived the ravages of time over several millennia. Scientific analyses performed on these items have determined the various chemical and biological processes involved in producing such magnificent materials. These sophisticated chemical technologies practiced in antiquity show that the ancient dyer was an advanced empirical chemist. This scientific craft was practiced from as far back as more than four millennia ago and was performed all over the ancient world, from the Near East to the Far East, and in-between. Keywords - Colorants, dyes, pigments, madder, indigo, HPLC
