Abstract
Mangosteen peel waste (MPW) is lignocellulosic agricultural residues that has the potential to produce bioethanol and bio-materials. This paper presents the multiple potential of bio-sugar, α-mangostin and bioethanol production from mangosteen peel waste. The MPW can produce biosugar (164.7 g/kg MPW) from in-house produced cellulase and pectinase at a 90 % conversion rate. The separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) produce bioethanol (63.2 g/kg MPW) with an ethanol conversion yield of 75 %. In addition, we attempted to enhance α-mangostin production by pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. The extraction of α-mangostin increased by 1.46-fold after a combination of popping pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. These results suggest that popping pretreatment can improve the bio-sugar, α-mangostin and bioethanol production of MPW. Keywords - Mangosteen peel, popping pretreatment, Bio-sugar, Bioethanol
