Abstract
The primary reason of an emission inventory is creating a useful document to generate an understanding of the sources of emissions and identify where is the opportunities for emissions reductions for subsequently can decision-making. This work reports the greenhouse gas emissions of anthropogenic origin inDistrict of Santa Marta for 2013 prepared under the Tier 1 methods provided by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The emission profile includes carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). In 2013, emissions wereabout 2.16Mt CO2 equivalents. The waste sector accounted for 68.07% of the total emissions, the energy sector contributed 29.46% of the emissions, of which 26.66% were from the transportation sector, and the industrial processes emissions were only 2.47% of the total. The largest potential for reduction is found in the waste treatment and energy sector (specifically transportation), which contributed with 97.53% of the total emissions and they are considered as target sectors for the implementation of technologies and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
