Abstract
Abstract- To promote the cost-effective as well as safe designs for cellular beams, the LTB resistance of EC3 by using General Method and Specific Method are investigated. Various parameters such as the section dimension, the section ratio, the opening ratio and the spacing ratio are considered in this study. The calculation results are compared with a nonlinear finite element model. The section properties for the LTB calculation are derived based on the 2T approach. In this paper, the LTB resistance only subjected to a constant bending moment is examined. Comparisons of the resistance are in terms of the maximum moment at the LTB failure. Through the comparisons, the computed resistance by using General Method is mostly slightly conservative whereas Specific Method mostly provides significantly overestimate results. However, for the short non-dimensional slenderness, General Method should be modified to provide the conservative resistance. It also is found that the non-dimensional slenderness and the section ratio clearly affect the prediction accuracy of the computed resistance for both methods. However, the other parameters less affect the accuracy. As a cost-effective and safe design, General Method of EC3 should be used to design the LTB resistance of cellular beams. However, further developments on the LTB design are required to consider the effect of the short non-dimensional slenderness and the section ratio.
