Abstract
Performance of unreinforced masonry (URM) structures under seismic loading is poor compared to gravity loading. Generally the URM buildings used for the habitat of people in the lower economic bracket are being constructed without involving engineering applications. So, use of composite for strengthening of such non-engineered buildings is a matter of seldom possible. It’s the need of the hour to find some strengthening techniques which will be low cost, easily available and can be implemented without involving much technical rigour. In this context, this work emphasizes in using of different low cost and easily implementable retrofitting techniques such as polypropylene band (PP-band), steel wire mesh applications in strengthening of URM structures. The in-plane and out-of-plane of masonry wallets are investigated both for URM and retrofitted models. It was revealed from the experiments that both the techniques are effective in increasing the load carrying capacity and also efficient in changing the mode of failure from brittle to ductile. Keywords - Unreinforced Masonry, In-Plane Loading, Out-of-Plane Loading, Retrofitting, PP-Band, Steel Wire Meshes.
