Abstract
This study aims to determine experimentally the kinetic friction coefficient between different aluminium alloys and structural steel. A sliding friction device was fabricated to conduct the friction test. Highstrength bolts were stressed to provide a clamping force, functioning as a normal force for the contact surface. Through a bolt gauge installed inside the bolt, the relationships between bolt tension force and strain were established in order to accurately monitor the clamping force. Plates of three aluminium alloy designations were tested under cyclic loading. Test results demonstrated that behaviour of friction force-displacement relations was repeatable and the hysteretic loops were nearly rectangular. The kinetic friction coefficient of aluminium alloy designation 1050 was 0.58 which was much higher than that of generally used brass-steel contact surface. The use of the aluminium alloy in the sliding friction device in seismic design appears to be very promising. Index terms - Friction, Coefficient, Aluminium alloy.
