Abstract
Routing in Flying Ad Hoc Networks (FANETs) is complex due to their unique characteristics like limited bandwidth, dynamic topology, and unreliable communication links. In such networks, geographical routing is the suitable approach due to its scalability and adaptability to network dynamics. However, in traditional geographic routing, the forwarding decisions based on distance may lead to the occurrence of a communication void and the selection of the next hop with an unreliable communication link. Thus, this paper proposes an enhanced forwarding mechanism based on 2-hop neighborhood information named 2-EFM to address these issues. The forwarding node considers the connectivity and proposed progress and link reliability(PLR) metric for selecting the optimal next hop. Simulation results show that the proposed forwarding policy performs better than the current forwarding schemes in avoiding communication voids and improving packet delivery ratio and throughput.
