Abstract
We had been negotiating between the Commission for the Protection of Personal Information and the European Commission since April 2016, in response to requests from the EU and Japan's business community. In July 2018, Japan and the EU agreed on a policy for the transfer of personal data between Japan and the EU. Based on this agreement, on 23 January 2019, the Personal Information Protection Commission Japan decided to designate the EU as the "specified country or region" under Article 24 of the APPI and the European Commission has decided to provide Japan with a "Adequacy Decision" under Article 45 of the GDPR. A framework to facilitate the smooth transfer of individual data between Japan and the EU came into effect on January 23, 2019. Keywords - GDPR, Adequacy Decision, APPI
